Aprepitant is usedwith other medications to help prevent nausea andvomiting caused by cancer drug treatment (chemotherapy).This medication is also used to prevent nausea andvomiting after surgery. Aprepitant works by blocking one of the body'snatural substances (substance P/neurokinin 1) that causes vomiting.
This medication willnot treat nausea or vomiting that has already started. Askyour doctor what you should do if you already have nausea orvomiting.
How to use Aprepitant
Read the PatientInformation Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before youstart taking aprepitant and each time you get a refill. If you aretaking the liquid form of this medication, read the Instructions for Usesheet for directions on the proper use of this medication. If you have anyquestions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Take this medicationby mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor. If you aretaking capsules, swallow the capsules whole.
Tirednessor hiccups may occur. If either of these effects lasts or gets worse,tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Remember that yourdoctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judgedthat the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many peopleusing this medication do not have serious side effects.
Beforetaking aprepitant, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you areallergic to it; or to fosaprepitant; or if you have anyother allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which cancause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for moredetails.
Before usingthis medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history,especially of: liver disease.
