Lupron (leuprolide) overstimulatesthe body's own production of certain hormones, which causes that production toshut down temporarily. Leuprolide reduces the amount of testosterone in men orestrogen in women.
Lupron is used in men to treat the symptoms of prostate cancer. Leuprolide onlytreats the symptoms of prostate cancer and does not treat the cancer itself.
Lupron Depot is used in women to treat symptoms of endometriosis (overgrowth ofuterine lining outside of the uterus) or uterine fibroids.
Before taking this medicine
Youshould not use Lupron if you are allergic to leuprolide or similar medicinessuch as buserelin, goserelin, histrelin, nafarelin, or if you have abnormalvaginal bleeding that has not been checked by a doctor.
Certainbrands or strengths of leuprolide are used to treat only men and should not beused in women or children. Always check your medicine to make sure you have receivedthe correct brand and strength.
Leuprolidecan cause birth defects. Do notuse if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor right away if you becomepregnant during treatment.
Lupron Depot injection is injected into a muscle, every 3 to 6months. Lupron injection (for the treatment of prostatic cancer) is injectedunder the skin once per day. You may be shown how to use Lupron injections athome. Do not give yourself this medicine if you do not understand how to usethe injection and properly dispose of used needles and syringes. Lupron Depotinjection must be administered under the supervison of a physician.
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Lupron: (hives,difficult breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever,sore throat, burning in your eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash thatspreads and causes blistering and peeling).
